Is it OK to have sex during my period?

Unless you’re opposed to it for personal reasons, there’s no need to avoid sexual intercourse or other activities during your period.  While sex during you period may cause a bit of a mess, it is safe to do so.  If anything, it can actually provide benefits to you which we will share below.

Advantages of having sex during your cycle include:

Help relieve menstrual cramping.  Sexual activity has been rumored to relieve cramps during menstruation. Specifically, during orgasm, where the contracting of muscles takes place.  It is more so the release during the contracting process that gives the temporary resolve.

Release of endorphins.  Intimacy can also help with the release of endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals.  Since this engaging activity can clear your mind – or at least focus it on pleasure – it can help distract you temporarily from menstrual distress.

Safe and short!    Did you know that the purpose of your period is to push out the uterine contents faster. That said, orgasms and the release of such could manifest as shorter cycles!

Less need for lubricant. While it may seem a bit messy, period blood can actually be used as a natural lubricant, as opposed to adding chemicals “down there”. This potentially makes it safer with less chemicals and foreign substances present.

The same areas that exist when you are sans-cycle also.

Remember that just because your body is cleansing doesn’t mean that it is resistant to contracting or spreading a sexually transmitted infection/disease. If anything, many viruses live and spread through the blood.  Using condoms every time you have sex can help reduce your risk of spreading or contracting an STI.

If you aren’t actively trying to conceive, using contraceptives is smart also.  Even though the likelihood of getting pregnant during your cycle is less common, it isn’t impossible!

  • If you have a tampon in, remove it beforehand and then wash hands well.
  • Keep a wet washcloth or wet wipes close by for easy and sanitary clean up.
  • Have your partner wear a latex condom. It will protect against pregnancy and STIs.
  • Try positions that are comfortable.  As your body is changing, some positions may not be as preferred as they are when you are not menstruating.
  • If it hurts at all stop right away and consult your OBGYN.
