The 3 Metabolic Body ID Types

Hey ladies!  Ever wonder why your friends can eat the same foods you do but not gain weight?  It’s likely tied to many varying reasons, but one in particular could be your metabolic ID.  Did you know that everyone has a unique metabolic type? It's important to learn how to eat right for your metabolic type because the same foods that energize others may leave you fatigued and bloated.

There are three main metabolic body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Eating specifically for your body type can help you lose weight and stay healthy. Naturally, you can also share common traits between 2 body types so it is good to know a little about each to identify with what may work best for your health and nutrition goals.

Ectomorphs have a narrow frame and a fast metabolism, meaning they’re often able to overeat without gaining much weight. For this reason, it is important that they get enough proteins and also benefit greatly from eating smaller meals more often throughout the day.  In addition, strength training is a helpful way to put on muscle and stay strong despite a lean aesthetic. Some other helpful tips include:

  • Don’t skip breakfast.
  • Consider protein supplements prior to strength training workout routines.
  • Eat smaller meals 6 times per day versus 3 larger meals.

Mesomorphs are known for a more athletic, medium build and can gain muscle easily. That said, they can also gain fat easily so what they eat and how they maintain body weight is important to address. This body type does well with exercise and can benefit quickly from HIIT (high impact interval training) techniques. Here are tips for this body type:

  • Do not overeat.
  • Make sure what you do eat is portion-controlled and quality versus processed junk.
  • If you want to lose weight, cut back on carbs!

Endomorphs are better at storing nutrients than the other two types, hence why they may have a bigger build. Endomorphs generally have thicker arms and legs with a round body. Workouts like cardio are great for this body type.  More tips that help with maintaining a healthy weight are as follows:

  • Avoid pastas and carbs. Brown rice is okay and opt for whole wheat if you are going to eat grains.
  • Fill up on fiber which will help keep you feeling full and dodging junk food cravings.
  • Find atkins or paleo diet meals that may be helpful to healthy plate options.

Do you identify with any of the above body type descriptions?  Consider looking further into how you can accommodate each body type and discuss with your doctor options for an optimal lifestyle supporting your body type.
